Granite Peak is the highest peak in Montana and the SW couloir route is easier compared the main route (class5).

Alex, thanks for posting the pictures. Answers some of my questions for Bob. Looks like quite a hike!

smO421, let me correct you on that first picture in your post before Chicagocwright gets to you -- those are POLAR BEARS!

On a more serious note, I think I'm remembering correctly from my reading about high pointers that Granite Mountain is one of the toughest state high points to do.

If those were polar bears, I'm afraid our friend would be eaten.

I used to feel that way too but over the years that actually has been the least painful part for me. By then I'm breathing air with more oxygen in it and my feet don't seem to hurt like before at that point. It's also the best part of the trail for walking downhill. Anyway probably an indication though of how crappy I feel on the rest of the hike more than anything else.

Steve,

I think Bob may have been "pushing your leg" with his suggested route. A far more appealing route (at least for me) might be the following:
http://www.climber.org/reports/2012/1809.html
Also, provided no weather issues, it might be doable as a day hike. Finding that "perfect day" would be the trick.
And, it is only 1,000 miles from the bay area eek
