Hi,

I am planning to go up it in next few weeks. Just want to make sure no snow on trail before going.

Also any tips on getting wilderness permit before going? I assume no problem with permits being restricted.

Thanks, Darp

You can see (old) Army Pass in the fifth picture down in this trip report: It's the journey, not the destination

Going up this weekend. Will post pics.

Yes, permits are restricted, but far easier than Whitney to get, either by reservation or by walk in.

Old army pass on June 18th... it was very icy and snowed in at that time -- I would not have tackled it without crampons/ice axe.

I chose the New Army Pass route, which was very doable, only a small scramble at the very top to bypass a cornice.

Langley itself was snow free.

Im trying to upload images from iphoto, but I'm not very technologically adept

Post links to any pictures, and someone here will tweak it so they appear.

Hey, speaking of: can it be made easier to post pictures? Like selecting them from one's own drive rather than having to post them online somewhere and then link them here?

Sorry, no, unless we had the resources of Facebook. On FB, you can select a picture on your local computer OR on the web, and include it in a post. But they have a herd of programmers making it all work. FB actually does it all (uploading into their system, then displaying it), but in fewer steps for the user. And on Facebook whatever you write disappears in a few days, so who would want that? wink

Thanks, it was cold in June, but has been hot the last week, am guessing should be passable by now or next week. Appreciate the info.

Just returned from Cottonwood Lakes over the weekend - hiked Cottonwood Trailhead > South Fork Trail > New Army Pass > Langley > Old Army Pass > Lake 5 > Muir Lake > South Fork Lake.

There is snow on Old Army Pass and freezes overnight. It is passable. I didn't find it difficult, however my girlfriend was petrified of the snow and sheer cliff below. We both made it safely across the snow and descended with no issues.

Use extreme caution. A CHP rescue helicopter made several landings Sunday in the vicinity of Old Army Pass, leading me to believe there was an accident of some sort.

Hi CVIN,

Thanks. I am now going July 26. Do you think snow will be gone then?
