How steep is the climb up the snow to Treasure Col? Are an ice ax and crampons necessary this time of the year (Aug -2014)?
thanks,

I had to go searching to figure out where Treasure Col is. Still not sure if it is nw or se of Mt Johnson.

I would think what snow is left on those slopes is pretty icy (they appear to be permanent snow, i.e. glaciers), so it would seem that ice tools would help.

This piqued my curiosity as well.
From "High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails" By R. J. Secor: "0.3 mi NNW of Mount Johnson" "Class 2; ice ax required."

Thanks. From what trip reports and photos I have seen, it seems like the snowfield/glacier has melted. I know all glaciers in the Sierra are much smaller now than 40 years ago.
