Hi All,

After summiting via the main trail back in June, I've decided to attempt the Mountaineer's Route this Saturday, Oct 18, with my brother. We're going to do it as a day hike with a 3 AM wake up, camping at the Portal.

Is anyone else going up on Saturday?

Weather forecast looks good so far.

Cheers,
Scott

Hi Scott,

You may already be planning this, but if not you should definitely hike up to and past the E-Ledges before attempting in the dark. Also, if you have not already done so be sure to review the links to MR advice:

The MR is not a trail, and it is fairly east to lose the route, so preparation is key to success.

Good luck!

John

Hi John,

Unfortunately, I won't be able to check out the E-ledges in the daylight.

I have been reading every trail report I can find and making notes. Thanks for the link! It's actually in my browser bookmarks and I've been reviewing every night after work.

I have experience with off-trail navigation and have a GPS track of the route loaded in my phone, so I'm hoping not to get too lost.

Thanks for the advice!

Here's my video of the E Ledges:

Note:
2:40 two ways to go. Bea scrambled up face of rock, Jim continued straight ahead on narrow ledge (more exposure but easier walking)
3:13 climb up log or by log left of big rock
3:40 stay left of big rock
3:55 go up narrow ramp, then climb two large steps
6:10 note these rocks and bushes. This is where you switchback to the left on another narrow ledge.

And another trip up the MR. E Ledges are from 5:00 to 9:00
This time at 7:00 we both take the straight ahead easier walking narrow ledge with more exposure

Marty, you're welcome, my pleasure. I enjoy making the videos and of course the hikes. My Vimeo page has many hiking vids.
