Hi: Hoping to get a permit this year. I did the approach over 20 years ago on my way to a climb. At the time I had a map and a brief description of the approach from the Fifty Classic Climbs book. I still have the book, but no longer have the map. While there are many descriptions about the approach on the net now, I wouldn't go without a good map.

Any recommendations of a good map, and where to purchase it?

Thanks!

Welcome, kmc,

First, the Mountaineers Route is in the Lottery if you day hike it, but if you want to do an overnight, the permits are reservable 6 months in advance, outside the lottery. They go fast.

As for maps: The Whitney Portal Store had a nice map of the main trail, but I don't think it shows the Mountaineers Route.

Here are two MR maps available on this site. The route on the map just below is a bit off-route.

  Map_MR_Route.doc     A MS Word document

Here's a link to MR information.

Hi Kmc,

Route from GPS from Sept. 2012 can be found at:

MR gps route

This route goes up the MR, and down the main trail. Also, gps went a bit "wonky" going up the final 400 (fairly normal I guess), but you will see the way I think.

This is a "live" map, that you can pan, zoom, etc... Also, for best results use the pull down (upper right), and select t4 topo high. This is most detailed map.

There were a couple of "off route" excursions, but nothing serious. Many use trails and water runoff paths that look inviting.

Good luck.

John

Thanks for the links, excellent info and love the GPS map! Hopefully I'll be needing it! I'll know on March 23. Good luck to all who apply.

Appreciate the link Bob. I'm planning to apply for the permit this weekend, for a weekday in early September. Hopefully it will work out.

K

p.s. I looked at the 50 Classic Climbs approach description, and it seems hard to believe that we made it to the base of the climb! There's so much more detailed info nowadays. Maybe we could do more with less back then...
