I just want to confirm that a bear canister is not needed for a day hike. On the USDA site it seems to indicate that a canister is always needed during summer season, but from what I've read on here and other places it sounds like it is just needed for overnight hikes.

You are correct, no canister is needed for day hikes.

However, be cautious about leaving your back pack unattended (in particular during darkness) as the bears like to snatch and run. Highest risk for having your back pack snatched is around the portal, where the bears have mastered this maneuver.
