Two of my co hikers hiked Clouds Rest about a month ago and when they learned that I wanted to take my group to Cathedral Lake they voiced their disapproval. Too crowded! They encountered 30 people on the summit of Clouds Rest and over a hundred hikers on the trail. They are afraid the Cathedral lake trail might be even busier.

I only had 5-8 people on the top of clouds rest when I was up there July 5th. And not all at the same time. Even had the top alone for a while before heading down. Guess I was lucky.

My group had a great time at Mammoth Lakes. John, your map to Lake Ediza (is it uh-deez-uh or uh-dye-zuh?)with notes on trail junctions was helpful - "turn right do not cross the bridge". I might have taken a wrong turn there. And oddly enough one of my group did take a wrong turn near the end of the hike. We were spread out on the trail, he thought he was following me, and he took the route to Red Meadows. When the rest of us arrived at the trail head we noticed we were missing one. Luckily he had a cell phone and service. His 14 mile hike was closer to 15 or 16.
Harvey, we very much enjoyed the hike to Mammoth Crest. My wife remarked that if we lived in the area that she would hike up there often.
Thanks to all.
PS I was going to camp just off Tioga Rd on my way home today and hike Clouds Rest tomorrow. However 120 was closed because of a fire so we came straight home to Reno. And I did get to eat at the Whoa Nellie Deli on the way down to Mammoth Lakes.
