Its not clear how her Sierra Club group lost her, but she survived on her own with broken bones. Odds get very low of finding her alive after 9 days. Aerial recon was hindered by the nearby Rough fire. A whistle helped SAR locate her. Funny, but the water filter keeps coming up as a saving grace item in every version of the story, like Sierra water would've killed her. What great news for her loved ones. That life-saving water filter! I noticed that right away in the story I read. It was in the subtitle, but the fact that she was out 9 days wasn't! Go figure. The print version cut the "after 9 days lost in Sierra" from the title, so somehow I missed that part. I would sure like to hear how she became separated from the group.

Looking at the online map provided by the Bee, their "hiker found" map puts her over on the JMT, at Big Pete Meadow, a few miles east of Muir Pass. That implies she hiked cross-country, eastward, crossing the LeConte Divide, then crossing Black Divide. If she hadn't "broken bones", she was a few hours from the JMT. Something doesn't add up. Edit: Monday morning paper now reports she was rescued 1.5 miles from where she was last seen. That helps. Here's the map showing the locations, as provided by the newspaper: Here's the map with the pointer on horsehead lake: http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php?ll=37.090771,-118.797826&z=12&t=t1&symbol=pg The spot she was found is east on the map, past Black Giant.

Amazing story!
Not only was she missing, she was alone, injured, over age 60, and too close to a major wildfire in smoky conditions.
She is made of tough stuff!
I hate to say, but whenever I see someone over age 60 go missing longer than 2 days I expect the worst. Whenever I hear of ANYBODY go missing for more than 3 days the worst is an unfortunately probable assumption. Yet 9 days in these conditions is extraordinary!!!
I am very glad for Ms. Miyuki!

1.5 miles from where she was last seen was "not in the immediate search area"? (Rusty Hotchkiss CHP, quoted in Fresno Bee) After 9 days?
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

Just as we suspected, she's a fighter!"It was getting dark," she wrote. "I tried to get back to the campsite but fell off the cliff. I landed on both legs."
As a result of the fall, she broke her left leg, right ankle and suffered a compression in her back.

Yeah, saved by less than a pound of plastic. More like keeping her wits about her when her world crumbled. See Ellen Goodman in February 2008.
As we get deeper into the quota season, the margin of error gets thinner. Temperatures in the forties, like she saw, are not going to kill you. Single digits without proper clothing will. Everyone likes a light pack but this time of the year you need extra this and that to be safe.
I have seen a ton of foolishness on this mountain in September.

Temperatures in the forties, like she saw, are not going to kill you. Trav, I know what you are saying. I was just on Whitney last week in shorts and tshirt while moving on a sunny calm day. but for completeness-sake, temp is not everything. Age, wind, and wetness (or submersion), and illness or injury are incredibly important. I'll try to post a couple of graphs. The first is about submersed water temp and a few hours of life at 10C (50F ). A completely soaked set of clothing could mimic that to some partial degree. The second is graph shows impressive age-related general (non-Whitney) risk of hypothermia. With enough lack of metabolism, enough age falls to room temp anyway.
