Hello - I have permits reserved for the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek-JM34, for 1 night. I have them for entering on a Saturday, and exiting Sunday. If we chose not to camp for any reason and exit on the same day would we really get fined or not be allowed to do that?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

People's plans change all the time. I don't think you'd have any trouble.

But if you go in with the plan of day hiking, you should try to change the permit and get the Day Use Mt Whitney Zone permit. It's the same as Main Trail day hikers need. You can very likely get the day use permit, as there are always no-shows and group dropouts.

Biggest part is making sure you have the parking pass for Whitney Portal.

Steve - thanks so much for the feedback! Does my permit not come with a parking pass?

I think so, but you should call the Wilderness Permit office and ask: 760-873-2483.

When are you going?

Will do! July 23 is our entry date. We will consider also showing up for the walk up permits as you have discussed here and in previous posts. Sounds like you have a pretty good chance to score a couple on either trail.
