Does anyone have an opinion on this device?

DeLorme inReach SE 2-way satellite communicator?

Thank you.

If you can afford it, it's probably the best communicator you can get. It has 2-way texting, satellite gps tracking so others can see where you are, and couples with a map app, to show you where you are on a map.

I picked up that info from the REI website where it sells for $300.

I have a SPOT 2, which sends out tracking locations where others can see where I am, but it doesn't give me confirmation that my signals are being received. But the idea that family and friends know where I am is a high value deal for me. The DeLorme unit offers that plus much more.

Iridium network, monthly plans available - both key features of the DeLorme that have to be stressed.

Recharging vs. swapping in a new battery is a minus, but that's how all devices are going. So pack your heavy USB battery bank on longer trips.

Not sure I like the dependency on smartphones for mapping and other features, though. More points of failure, more electronics to carry and keep dry and charged, although I did carry all that stuff this summer for other reasons, all on top of a sat phone, so really not that big of a deal.

If I ignored my preference for being able to call voice and reach land lines, I'd be all over this device.

The purpose is for my husbands peace of mind. I want to hike alone, I am very aware of the risk, so he needs a way to know where I am most of the time.
If you know of another device which will accomplish this I am open to exploration.

Thank you

I'm in the same situation, often doing the hike solo.

Last year, I rented a SPOT. I agree w/ Steve that it's more limited than the Delorme. The cost for a one-way rental was reasonable. There are a couple of places on line where you can do this; they mail it to you, you mail it back. The SPOT does have a pre-programmed button to summon 911 help.

The cheaper, less effective solution is to rely on your cell phone. Most people's phones now get a signal at the windows, and sometimes on the summit (or elsewhere.) As you're coming down at the end of the day, you'll likely get a signal on and off on the series of switchbacks on the last stretch of the Muir Wilderness.

I have used one twice. Both times were long hikes with my kids and my wife wanted to be able to keep up with how we were doing. It is pretty versatile in that you can send preset messages and breadcrumbs very easily without a lot of cost. You can also send and receive custom messages. We rented both times. It was worth the cost and a little extra weight to give my wife some peace of mind.
