Does anyone have thoughts about the following MSR solo tents: Hubba v. Hubba HP? I see that the Hubba HP is lighter, more expensive, and substitutes nylon ripstop for mesh. Are there any downsides, other than price, to choosing the Hubba HP over the Hubba?

I would definitely go for the lighter version -- looks like more than a pound of difference, but only a few dollars difference.
I suppose if you were camping in a place where you were only trying to keep the mosquitoes out, the Hubba would be ok. But otherwise, you're probably going to put the fly over it anyway. So the mesh would not matter.

Thanks. I really appreciate your advice. Going with the principle that lighter is best (and that mesh is okay), I bought the Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1. Weirdly, it is actually larger. And REI has a great price.

Contrats on the purchase. I hope it takes you on many memorable trips!

Hmmm...I've always assumed lighter is always more expensive, not necessarily best.
What is now a two person tent is basically a large one person tent. I don't know about you I wouldn't want to be in a 50" wide x 82" Length x 37" height with two people. The weight of tents, for that matter packs, have come down over the last 5 years because the materials used but also size...there is a a lot less there, there.

Makes sense, but these are all one person tents. The Seedhouse SL1 is bigger, lighter, and cheaper than either of the MSR Hubbas, go figure.

I have the SL2 and love it. Watch the mesh: it tends to be a bit fragile, and it developed a few holes after my first two seasons (but worked the REI exchange option and got a new one).
