Mt Whitney Zone Forums The Chat Room Lone Pine Smokehouse

I was surfing on the Net when I typed in Lone Pine and clicked on the chamber of commerce link.

That ongoing construction project across from Dow Villa and next to the Pizza Factory (since 2004 when I first entered the holy city of Lone Pine) finally materialized into the Lone Pine Smokehouse Lone Pine Smokehouse.

My wife and I GOTTA try that new place out!

Yum!! Years ago, my bud and I came off a Whitney trip, then went up and dayhiked Langley the next. We got back to Lone Pine in time to go to a bar-b-que place that had the BEST food!

I think it was this place, right next to Gardner's True Value / Sporting Goods, but not sure. They didn't stay long, but the food was really good.

You can see in the picture the rock chimney structure. I think they were roasting the beef in that fireplace.

For about 18 years, Curt Herring did his bar-b-que business there under the name Smoke Signals. He built the stone oven but tried not to modify the 110 year old building any more than necessary. He lived upstairs. Season was a little short of fishing season at each end, Thursdays through Mondays. He traveled, often to Mexico, the rest of the year. Served food on styrofoam to avoid putting in a commercially rated water heater to wash dishes. Most of the seating was out back on a buckboard, a wagon side, a barn door and such. The last few years in failing health he ran a jewelry business of sorts there. He had been purchasing the materials on his earlier travels.

The pork ribs were my favorite.

Yes! That was it! I remember everyone sitting at a really long picnic table.

I was disappointed when I went by later and it was closed.
