I currently have an extra overnight permit starting August 8. Planning to camp some where around Consultation Lake, Trail Camp, or as low as Outpost Camp for 2 nights. Looking to get to summit for sunrise on August 9, my birthday, a big 0. This is my first and likely once in a lifetime summit of Whitney. Landing in Vegas on 8/5, driving to Lone Pine for 8/6 permit pickup, then up to Whitney Portal to scope it all out. Doing an acclimation hike to Lone Pine Lake early morning on 8/7. Also planning an early morning start on 8/8 to try to beat some heat, find camp, watch the sunset. Looking at very early start on 8/9, time will depend on camp location. Sunrise is at 607, twilight at 540, goal to be at summit by twilight. Spend another night at camp on 8/9 and head down to the portal on 8/10. If weather doesn't cooperate for 8/9 summit, will spend another night and attempt summit on 8/10. Looking for a like minded, experienced hiker, that is prepared for this hike.

Hmmm Interesting. smile I also have a overnight permit starting August 8(till August 10).
This is my third straight year to summit the Whitney.
First year was Day hike and last year was overnight hike and camped out at Trail Camp.

My this year plan is about same as last year. (starting Whitney Portal around 9 and camping at Trail Camp on Aug. 8.)
I just checked the weather and it forecasts clear Monday night thru Friday. about 50'F at Trail Camp smile

At dawn, plan to hit the 99 switchback and be at Summit before 10 am and come back down all the way to Portal.

Back up plan (if rain/t storm): Aug 10 Attempt. One more night in Mountain.

I have done Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hiking and almost hike every week past 5 years.

We may see each other on the trail.

Azhiker,

I am an avid hiker as well. Hike at least once a week in NH white mountains all seasons.

Sounds like our plans are close but just a little off.

I have a red osprey kestrel 48 pack, sunglasses all day.
