Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Bear Box at Vidette Meadows

When you drop down to Vidette on the JMT and hike south for about a third of a mile, you come to a bear box. Well, that box is now locked with a note on it from the Park Service indicating that the locking of the bear box is due to hikers leaving trash and other items in it.

The next bear box going sout is about a mile.

Regarding the trash: Good grief!!

This action seems a little over the top, just like the stupid, pointless continued closure of the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area in SoCal due to a 1300 acre fire that started on the edge of the wilderness one month ago and hasn't grown appreciably in the last three weeks.
