http://cdec.water.ca.gov/reportapp/javareports?name=PLOT_SWC.pdf Based on the State of California's snow data, currently the southern Sierra (where Whitney is located) is sitting with slightly more snow than 2016-2017. We had an exceptionally cool and stormy May, which paused the snowmelt and even helped the snowpack gain back some of what it had lost. The South Sierra snow survey locations are showing the snowpack as of June 3rd is 188% of normal for the date.
June so far has been hot locally, and models are showing the possiblity of a heatwave over the next week or more, so I wouldn't be surprised if the melt starts accelerating.
As a side-note, I'm looking out the window at the Sierra near Bishop and see what appear to be dozens of new wet slide avalanches. Definitely something to be aware of up on Whitney as things start to heat up. Be aware of travel under chutes, and avoid steep terrain when the snow starts to get saturated and form roller-balls.
