I am starting the JMT on Aug 1 with a friend and we want to park our car at Whitney Portal on July 31 and get a shuttle/ride to Mammoth so we can pick up YARTS on the morning of Aug 1. Anyone in the same position and want to shuttle? Is anyone headed that way on July 31 and want to give us a ride?

Have you checked -- isn't there an Owens Valley bus that will take you from Lone Pine to Mammoth or Lee Vining?
Crest, now ESTA -- Eastern Sierra Transit Authority, northbound bus leaves Lone Pine at 6:15 AM every day, goes all the way to Reno.

I was told by ESTA that they do not run buses on the weekend and since July 31 is a Saturday I figured we needed another form of transport to Mammoth. Is this still true?

Why don't you call them. I got that info from their web site.

You might also consider another option: Park your car in Mammoth, and then hitch hike (or take the ESTA bus) back to Mammoth at the end of your trip. Everyone reports hitching from the Portal to Lone Pine is quite easy. Not sure about Lone Pine to Mammoth, but there is an awful lot of traffic on the 395, so it ought to work ok. Also, after your completion of the trail, it might be a day that works with the ESTA bus.
