Last week, on August 27, I climbed the East Face of Mt. Whitney in a roped team led by Sierra Mountaineering International (SMI).

My climb is notable for a three reasons:

1) It is a very strenuous technical climb for a 66 yo guy! The East Face is rated 5.7 in rock climbing difficulty, and a Grade III in duration. It consists of ~13 pitches.

2) Forty-five years ago in 1975 I led this climb with my buddy Bret Hughes, in the dead of winter. Neither of us had ever been on Whitney before...

3) It is unusual, but not unheard of, for a 66 year old guy like me to make the climb!

We descended the Mountaineers Route, and spent the prior and latter nights at Iceberg Lake.
