3 buddies and I are headed over from Chicago and trying to find a good small scale hike to check gear and fitness before we attempt a summit on the 30th. Are there any good sub 10 mile hikes that we could camp at one end of at good altitude 2-3 days before our overnight climb?

Baldy is a pretty good pre-Whitney hike and you could try for a campsite at Manker Flats.
Edit! Baldy is down in the LA area, not up by Whitney.

Meysan Lake Trail, numerous trails out of Horseshoe Meadows, look around Mammoth Lakes or Glacier Lodge west of Big Pine. The majority of these will require an overnight permit because you'll be in a Wilderness area. Meysan Lake Trail is my favorite since its starts at the Whitney Portal Campground.
