The wind map is ground wind direction, I would assume. So... perhaps the winds are causing a funnel of some sort and air is then moving upwards from that "black hole" and away from it higher up in the atmosphere.

Pretty solid assessment Steve. To put it plainly, low pressure systems suck inward counter-clockwise, and high pressure systems blow outward clockwise. Those two low pressure systems working so closely together are exactly why it's all moving inward to the middle of the US right now.
