It sounds like your uncle is pretty sensitive to the altitude. Carrying a pack can really increase the AMS symptoms, too. He'd probably do a little better if he had some Diamox.
Good you were able to connect using the FRS radios. The experience shows how a group splitting up can become a confusing situation.
