Thank you guys...I think I'll take the main trail down for a nice loop. I'll spend a night at the Whitney portal motel and start hike at 4:30AM. If I can get to Lone Pine early on Friday I'll drive up and check out the North Fork intersection.

I would consider it an "imperative" to check out the trail up to and including the E-Ledges. There are several false trails as you make your way from the Main Trail to the E-Ledges, and they can cost you a lot of time and energy. Checking it out the day prior will be time well spent.
