I got a PM asking about road conditions and decided to answer here for others to see.

The road is clear except for a few icy patches until you get to the sign warning about falling rocks. There are some huge rocks on the road, but they are easy to drive around. Shortly before the Meysan Lakes trailhead, the road is covered in icy snow. You could park here and probably be safe from rock fall. I drove further in my F250 4X4 (all-season tires and no chains). The road conditions deteriorated quickly, and I decided saving a few minutes of hiking time wasn't worth risking getting stuck. I turned around and parked on the un-packed snow on the side. Someone in a Subaru had done the same. It didn't appear that anybody had driven much further in quite a while.

There is a pickup with cable chains stuck right next to the trailhead. It's been there a long time. I would guess that 4WD and two sets of real chains (not cables) might get you to the portal, but you could probably hike up in the same time it would take to install the chains, with no risk of getting stuck.
