Do you have a gps coordinate for the location of the gate? That would help in calculating the distance. And we could REALLY use a picture from someone.
I have a hard time believing it would be easier hiking up from the lower campground -- lots more elevation to climb.
Inyo County Road Dept people in past years always tried to open the road in time for the opening of fishing season, which I believe (but really not sure) is the last Saturday in April.
I am wondering about the "cars and trucks stuck up there" statement. There was a pickup stuck in snow at the Portal this winter, but not sure about any others. And as for the reason for the gate, I think it has more to do with what I wrote above.
