In all honesty, my experience was pretty limited before the trip (and really still is). There is really no ice on the trail, just slippery snow. The main thing I used my ice axe for was step cutting up the chute, and it wasn't necessary, I was just trying to make it easier for my slower companions.
The route, if the switchbacks are still closed, is straight up the chute just to the right of the switchbacks. You should be able to see where others are going to find the best way up. Good luck, be safe and have fun!
