One of my SAR partners and I spent a very cold October night, in an involuntary bivvy, on the saddle in your picture. It was tempting to escape down to the Muir Trail, but the thought of scrambling through the boulder field at night made us decide to gut it out and wait for the helo in the morning. We will never forget that night.

The eastern approach by road and trail has really deteriorated over the years.
