Seriously folks, get the AllTrails App on your phone. For $20 get the "Pro" version and download maps so you always know where you are even without 3G or LTE coverage. A real life saver.

There are certain things where electronics work in the wilderness. Phone and mapping is not one of them. Your 6" screen is not big enough to give you good picture of the region, especially if things go south. Try triangulation on that screen.

Good paper USGS 7.5' quads are best, Tom Harrison Cartography will do.

As a Forest Service volunteer, we see it all. Most have between nothing and pieces of paper with squiggly lines...or picture in a phone of the message board. It is a rare day that someone has as much as THCM any more.

If you can't navigate with it, it isn't a map. If you don't know how to navigate, why have a map?
