Thank you all for the responses. Apparently the ordinance regarded owners of short term rental homes who do not live in the county, and the owner was "busted". What a hassle! We found a house in Inyokern, so it is additional hassle with a longer drive, but crisis averted.
Traveling with kids is rewarding, but hassle...no longer can we just put the seats down in Alabama Hills
