Hey, it's about time, isn't it.

I just went in there and spent $$$. I was hoping to find some stuff on winter clearance (shoot, other stores are already advertising swimwear!). But no dice. frown

...and the clerk I talked to didn't even know what vapor barrier socks were.

And now for some BREAKING NEWS!!!!...

REI now gives a 20% discount to all military personnel, retired, active duty, reserve!

Just kidding...oh, but I wish...

Also, wifey-pooh would not be happy since me spending on superfluous stuff I don't need...

"But, honey, you to the Zappos thing!"

OUCH!!!

Now, the REI Fresno have two type of sales people: First floor and second floor. First floor speaks for itself with its vast array of cycling, kayaking, snowboarding, camping, backpacking, eating, cooking, etc. You get the picture

The second floor is clothing apparel and shoes. Go figure.

Now, if the "second" floor associate did not know about the socks...then there is something wrong there.

I do believe REI used to sell golfing and fishing equipment many many moons ago. I could be wrong with the fishing.

With Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops (and their HUGE floor), I bet the REI folks are pondering this idea. I am not a "folger" but it would be nice to get last minute items like golf balls and tees (no clubs), fishing lures and bait (no poles), ammunition (no firearm sales). Why this approach? Simple, you should already have the "hardware," you just need the incidentals. I thinks a few select stores may get the nod. I don't expect the Huntington Beach store to stock up on ammo since there is nothing but beach. You get the picture.

And I thought waiting for Santa was bad... grin

Now we got permit hits, REI dividend, tax refund (for those who filed early), etc.

Oh, the joys of adulthood!

Gotta love every moment of it.

Sure is worth the wait!

I can never seem to spend any money with REI to rack up any dividend because they always seem to be way more expensive. The last major purchase I wanted to make on REI was when I bought my GPS. I tried to use a 20% discount but GPS was excluded from that. Then REI had it for 600 dollars while Amazon had it for 500 and I didn't have to pay taxes on Amazon so even with some return with the dividend it was not worth buying it from REI.

I've been really disappointed with REI last couple of years. In most cases, its like shopping at a big box store. Sales people do a lot of guessing, not well informed. Usual "help" is being waved over to the general direction of one department or another. Fitting for a pack is like hearing a rote recitation of a training video, not first hand knowledge or experience. Vapor barrier socks? Most of em don't know what a Sierra cup is, and a Kelty is a child carrier. I do my own research and shop online. Free delivery if you pick up at the store is about the only justification for their existence.

Got it!

A whopping $35!

Been looking at those solar chargers for our cellphones.

Now, as for the staff...

Sales is not a way to get rich. There is a very high turnover. During tough times, people who got laid off from good jobs often wind up in sales just to make a buck and to keep from going under.

As for REI, not many associates are the outdoorsy types like us. There is a lot of gear in inventory and gear to be sold. Not everyone has an answer.

I imagine you go to a dealership to buy a car and expect the transportation consultant to know everything from mpg to horsepower to towing packages to GPS to engine displacement to torque. Not all car sales staff are car savvy.

REI is still a great store. I have a problem with gear purchased and I get no hassles for a return or a swap.

$ 298.65 dividend. But since I've been a member since 1961 there isn't alot of gear left in the store that I need or want. Most of the dividend came from using the REI Visa Card.

already spent most of my $58 dividend... snow stakes for the tent, insulated bottle pouch, and a Buff - never would have bought a piece of cloth for $20 had it not been for the dividend.

Doesn't matter how much my refund is.....my "significant other" always gets it!

It's actually pretty sick as one of her Valentine Days gifts was a $50.00 certificate to Dicks Sporting goods. For her birthday, she got a microscope............. At least she's not hard to buy for :-) Yea, and don't go there with the microscope jokes.

Mine came out to $29. But since they also gave the 20% off coupon I can use that and my dividend to get a pretty good deal on new boots.

CMC2, you are my bestest friend! wink

I used to get those whopping refunds.

You're right, I have practically everything.

The 20% may not apply to the chargers, but I may get other stuff like those thin merino wool socks (make great dress socks) and underwear.

I had a nice $180 dividend this year, mostly due to the GPS unit that I replaced through them. Can't beat their return policy, which is why with items that I'm tough on, I'll usually spend a little extra money for the peace of mind that I can take it back and get a new one or a refund, no questions asked.

I used it to get myself a new Smartwool base layer and part of a new tent. Bring on the spring and summer time!

I'm too cheap to buy a new parka, so I'm blowing my 20% discount on a titanium cup. frown

REI dividend gone...

A Joby gorillapod, a Chums lanyard, and a Gerber Miniparaframe knife. Used the 20% on the Joby. Had to fork over some extra cash, but I feel I done did good.

Can't wait until next year!

I wound up getting a better deal on a tent on eBay, so I used my dividend on a new pair of Taku pants. I have an old pair that I really like, but the old ones don't have belt loops. The new ones do.

Still have a little money left, no idea where that's going.
