Hi Steve. Thanks for keeping tabs on progress for all of us. Ugh no hits to the bank card yet and a 55% chance of getting a spot....this not knowing is starting to feel frustrating, but it is only my first year. I've seen posts from three and four time 'losers' so I guess your first lottery process is the most closely watched and every year after that is old hat or you choose to not participate anymore and just show up for a permit. Well, March is just about a third over....

Hi NJ Hiker. Last year I received my permit Saturaday March 13th (credit card hit) and had it in my mail Wed March 17th. A number of others received theirs starting a few days earlier. Most it seems received notification of their permits later. So, hopefully we will be getting them soon. Jim

Lottery progress as of March 9, 2011. 7,335 Mail Received 350 Rejected ( sent back for corrections ) 6,988 Accepted into the Box 3,436 Reservations Made 2,353 Applications Not Successful ( no space for requested dates ) 1,200 Applications yet to process, more arriving daily
With the extended application period (closes March 15), they are still accepting applications, so they can not predict when processing will be done. They expect to start charging credit cards by the end of next week ~3/17 or so. Same for cashing checks. Mailing reject notices will begin after the March 15 deadline. Mailing success notices begins when credit card and check processing begins.

I'm unclear on how the lottery works? I sent in my application on the first day and requested any weekday in July or the first part of August. I didn't think I would have a problem until I started reading blogs and message boards. At first I though all applications were looked over as they were received and reservations made if there was availability. Now I'm wondering if it's more a raffle style, with all the submitted applications in a big basket and they pull a certain number of applications out each day (half of them never even getting looked at because they weren't pulled)? I'm not sure I want to admit this.... but on Feb. 16, I actually had my visa set to send me my cell a text message everyday so I can monitor my account and see if I get a hit from Whitney. I actually feel sad each day when there is nothing. Maybe tomorrow!??!?!!

iteach4th: It's very high-tech. It involves a leaf-blower and the stair-well. You can read about it here.

wagga, that's not what I heard. Someone very high up the chain of Forest Service personnel told me that after they get all the applications for the lottery, they take them up to the Owens River crossing in Laws. Then they dump them in the river. Between Bishop and Big Pine, many get caught up in the tree falls, weeds, reeds and sometimes get stuck on sand banks. Many do get through though and if they can get past the musk rats, fishing lines and other obstacles, there's a good chance they can make it to the major obstacle, Tinemaha Reservoir. Then it gets tricky. If the winds aren't blowing strong to the South, the applications can just lie around the lake for weeks, many just drifting to the bottom. But, the lucky ones reach the outlet at the Southwest corner of the reservoir. If they don't get shredded up whooshing through the pipes, then they get back into the flow of the Owens River. From there, it's just a short journey to the Los Angeles Aqueduct. After passing Independence a few of them reach Lone Pine. At that point, Doug reaches down with a fishing net and scoops up the lucky winners and takes them to the Eastern Sierra Interangency Center and Forest Service Dept off the 136!!! I'm so excited.......I think mine will be a lucky one. Good luck.

OOHHHH man, it's just how I imagined it in my head. Tell me it's not so. I think I saw my application get blown under the copy machine.... Thanks for the info, the process is clear to me now.

I'm a first-timer in the lottery. Like everyone else, I've been checking my bank account twice a day. Good news! My check was cashed on 3-18 and I'm in! I mailed it on Feb. 1.

That's great! I just checked my credit card and no hit. I too mailed mine in on Feb. 1. Maybe Monday will bring good news. I'm learning just how impatient I really am.

Mailed mine in early Feb. Still no credit card hit yet. Checking at least daily.

CONGRATS! Now you can make firm plans. Do you know when are you are going? Or did you put in a ton of dates in several months, like me?

I should get confirmation in mail on dates I had chosen soon for my wilderness permit, based on other hikers past experience. Hopefully this week. I applied as a single hiker. I often wonder how many groups of 15 are chosen, which obviously takes a lot of single or double hikers out of the mix. My dates were during the the last two weeks of June (might need crampons)weekdays only, and 3 weekdays in Sept. during second week. I live in Delaware. Assuming the NJ is Jersey!

I have been rejected . I asked for 1 person entering any day from last week in July through 1st week of Sept. The stamp on my returned permit was Feb 11. The 2nd stamp was "No Quota Space For Dates Requested". Guess I'll have to wing it. Show up and hope there is a cancellation. Sounds like many others have been successful doing this. Good luck to all Jim

REJECTED!!!
A bit surprised...I gave a rather extensive list that started on July 2nd and ended in the third week of August. With only 8 days at the end of July excluded.
My plan now is to go up at my leisure, see if I can get walk-in permits and if I can't, just head up to Meysan Lake and then bag Mallory and Irvine.

Hey y'all. New to the forums and a first time lottery participant. Just thought I'd say hi and share in the agony of waiting for the final word from the powers that be.
No charge to my card yet, and no word in the mail.

Rejected!!! I requested mid-week dates in mid July, mid to late September and a boatload of dates in August. All rejected for insufficient quota space. I really thought the mid to late September dates would be safe back up dates.

Joe, you and Gary and the rest of your climbing party can join me, my son and a couple of friends on the meysan lake trail and on up to Mallory and Irvine.
With all of the snow this year, I'm thinking August, but now i have complete flexibility on when I schedule the trip, so July is still open too. Tom
