Canadian woman found in Nevada wilds says she knew end was near

Sun May 8, 5:52 pm ET

VANCOUVER (Reuters) - A Canadian woman who survived seven weeks stranded in the Nevada wilderness
had a premonition her ordeal was ending but did not know if she was about to die or be rescued,
her family said on Sunday.

Rita Chretien was recovering in an Idaho hospital, having survived by drinking melted snow and
rationing a small supply of candy, food and fish oil as she read a Bible in her stranded vehicle
to pass the time, doctors and relatives said.

add one more to the "GPS is to blame" stories

Quote:
The couple were using a GPS unit to navigate when they got lost attempting to take a scenic route to Las Vegas.

Hmmm ... can you really hold a GPS responsible? I mean, a GPS contains the electronic version of a map, a map which was probably first available in paper format. If the couple had been following the paper version, and gotten lost/stuck in the mud, etc, would the reaction be 'add one more to the "map is to blame"'?

Regardless of the tool, we still have to use common sense and good judgement.

My comments in no way suggest that this couple didn't use good judgement, and I hope she will recover and that her husband will be found safe and sound as well.

When the guy from "Into the Wild" was dying slowly in the bus, I always wondered why he did not burn a tire.....same for the woman found with her jeep in Death Valley & this latest case, too.

The only thing that I can figure is that they had no matches, but then you can start a fire with the cigarette lighter (do they still have those in cars??)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Who is going to see the smoke? The same types of people who eventually find the person in peril, but perhaps sooner. Have you ever seen a burning tire from a distance: black smoke for miles and miles in the distance.

Nothing draws attention like fire/smoke.

I say this more as a pondering, rather than admonishing.

Well there IS a blind trust in electronic gizmos by some, these days.

Pretty sad story. Sure hope they find the husband.
