I know its to early to tell, but is it starting to look like I need to buy crampons or an ice ax for my son and I? I am hoping the snow will be packed down by all the hikers by the time we hit the trail.

Heck, it looks like it could snow at any time this week all the way down to the Portal. So yea, it may be a good time to start getting prepared, especially since you'll want to get some instruction and practice on using the crampons and ice axe before you go. The snow should be very well consolidated by early July, doubtful that snowshoes will be of any use by then.
