A friend and I are looking to hike to the summit of mt. Whitney on July 7th for a day hike. We both are in excellent hiking shape with much experience however neither of us have climbed in ice with crampons. Mt. Whitney permit office said there still will be snow and ice on July 7th. My question is how bad would this ice be to hike through with crampons and ice axe? I figure we all must start somewhere right? Are there any groups or a hiker going that day that might be interested in grouping up together? Any advice is much appreciated!

My brother and I, also both beginners, are planning to day hike Mount Whitney on June 23rd (this Thursday). I can't give any advice now, but I will be posting a trip report soon after, so look for that. I will definitely include info about the snow conditions and whether we used our crampons and ice axes.

Hey Tom,

My group of 5 is headed up on July 7th as well. But we are going to do what we can about getting overnight permits on the 6th instead.

We have some winter climbing experience, but we're far from experts. This, as any hike/climb, will be another great learning experience for sure.

I don't see why not. We'll be camped at the Portal the night before. I have no idea as to what time we'll be leaving, or anything like that as of yet though. We're procrastinators like that!

Cool! Me and my friend Matt will be camping at the portal the night before. We may just trek it both of us alone but maybe a group would be better. Either way maybe we could meet up at the camp site the night before and go over some tips. I'll pm you my number.
