My group of 8 won't be attempting Whitney starting Sunday and exiting Tuesday the 12th. I will call tomorrow to release our permits. FYI for anyone wanting to know. I may have a chance to do it 7/31 with another group and hoping the weather and conditions will be more safe since Im a first timer! For those of you that are doing it next week, good luck. Will look forward to reading your trip reports. smile

When I went in on Tuesday to try to get permits for a trip leaving that same night, the Ranger at the office in Lone Pine told me that there were a total of 40 available for that night.

Looks like a lot of people are waiting until later in the year this year.

GandC, that is good info. When I get the Unused Permits numbers, they are what are left after all the walk-ins have come and gone. I wish we could find out just how many are available at the 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. times when the no-shows are declared.

As a note, I arrived in Lone Pine at 10:45 on Saturday the 2nd. I got into the lottery for any type of permit I could get. We picked numbers and I got #4. There was a large group ahead of me (#1) and another 4 or 5 in the other groups, #'s 2 and 3. I was still able to have my choice of overnight or day-hike for 5 people for Sunday the 3rd. I hurt my knee a bit on the way down the Mountaineer's Route on Sunday, so I turned in my initial reservations that Gary had sent me.

In short....if you need permits, show up and get in the lottery. I couldn't believe we actually got permits for the next day on a holiday weekend.
