Anybody know what the smoke is like at the portal and on the climb up?

Web cams in the area appear pretty clear. Click on the Mt. Williamson cam on the left. (Our Whitney webcam is not working currently.)

Farther south on Owens Lake, looking west from the Keeler cams, it looks pretty smoky yet. Keeler is on the east side of Owens Lake (dry lakebed), and those cameras point west toward the Sierra. Here's the Owens Lake dustcam site: http://www.gbuapcd.org/dustcam.htm

You will find a lot of smoke in the air. The smoke level rises above the summit. Conditions are better in the morning than in the afternoon when the wind carries the smell and ash higher.

Just got back from the portal. No smoke to speak of this afternoon.Looks clear and good to go.

As I just wrote in response to a different post, minimal smoke this weekend (July 23-25). The only smoke that got close and personal was a bit of haze and smoky smell at Trail Camp on July 24 evening, from about 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. I did see haze on the climb down from the summit in the distance, but overall, visibility was great.
