5 of us are planning a two night trip on the Mountaineers route. We will be camping both nights at Glacier lake. I read somewhere that Bear Canisters are REQUIRED.. is this true?

Last year the best price for renting a bear canister was from the Portal Store or the Hostel in Lone Pine. $2 / day.

Please call ahead a confirm the rental price and availability.

Portal store is nice, but their canisters are large. If you do any hiking at all and plan to spend nights on the trail, I think it would be prudent to get a smaller canister. I really don't get the canister thing above treeline. (It's the rules) It's more for the Marmots, Pikas and mice then the bears. The bears are waiting for the campers, campers cars, bear boxes to get fed.

On the other hand, if food was available at the upper elevations, you never know, the bears may go and see how easy it is to get.
