A coworker has reported this from a neighbor.
This lady's car has been attacked, not to mention her washing machine and dishwasher. Hoses chewed all over the place, causing a bunch of repair bills.
Well, today, her car was hit AGAIN! She took it to the repair shop, and they have to replace the hoses a second time.
I have heard of marmots doing this up in Mineral King, and I have had my hiking poles chewed in the Sierra (Alta Peak), but have not heard of the problem otherwise.
They're blaming the problem on rats, but I'm not so sure....

Rats and rabbits - they keep us in business. My bet in Fresno is that one of those creatures is causing the havoc. Recommend after the repair that they pressure wash the engine area and under carraige to get rid of urine and other trace contamination. Then maybe a spray with ammonia. Also recommend in area that vehicle is parked, set moth balls down as an added deterrent.

I have heard of this several times in the past, and it has almost always been squirrels.

Wild rabbits don't inhabit the city area. Along the river parks, there are little cottontails, but that's about it. This house is several miles of wall-to-wall houses from that.
But squirrels.... they DO live in the trees, etc. I'll mention it. ...since all sorts of rat traps don't seem to be working.

OK everyone here is one solution. Buy a Hav A Hart (Havahart) animal trap. They come in various sizes but I think the squirrel/chipmunk size will be what you need. I have trapped and relocated a couple of dozen squirrels over the years by using peanut butter in a jar lid placed on the trigger plate. The key is to relocate the trapped animal and release it at least 5+ miles from your home or the rascals will return, especially if you dump them in Steve C's yard and it is really close to your home. Also, unfortunately a bird feeder does attract them. One hazzard is that a squirrel removed will leave a vacancy and another will move into your yard. Just keep at it and relocate the animal in a similar environment where there is food and water for them, ie a distant park or oak grove. We have been lucky in that alot of foxes live nearby and they help eliminate the problem too. You might have to check with local authorities to see if trapping and releasing squirrels/chipmunks is allowed where you live. You don't need chewed wires and a visit form the Division of Wildlife too. www.havahart.com

I have found the "dump in Steve C" program very effective, as I live several hundred miles away from him. It is more difficult since he removed the tree, as there is less room for the extra squirrels, but I never dump more than 5 at a time. (plus a few skunks)

Hmmmm... I mentioned the squirrel angle to my coworker, who then said the neighbors back yard is a mini-forest with lots of California Redwoods, inhabited by many squirrels.
...Those rat traps may be the wrong thing!
I passed along the havahart and squirrels links.
