What is the latest time one should start leaving portal campground for camping at Trail Camp before it gets too dark and also to secure a decent spot to camp.

Thanks,
Stalin

to me, the more important factor is starting early enough to have cool temps for all that climbing from 8400ft warmth to 12,000 ft.

Then again, that might get you there at noon, and you have the rest of the day to sit around in the sun or ugh, hot tent at shadeless Trail Camp. Your choice.

I have never had a problem finding a campsite at TrailCamp. yes, lots of people there, but plenty of creative sites are located around the lake, off the trail, or at nearby Consultation Lake.

There is not really an issue with finding a spot to camp.

In terms of time, there is no real need for an early start.
It is 6 miles, about 4k elevation gain. Most easily do it in 6 hours, but it is good to leave a margin if you don't know the mountain. Especially if you have not followed an acclimatization schedule. It is now getting dark after 8p.

So, noon is a very comfortable timeframe.

Personally, I like to hike when it is cooler, though.

I'm with Harvey and Ken on this. This trail is mostly sun exposed the whole way up to Trail Camp. Even on a cool day, you can get overheated.

Start early, take your time stop at creeks and dunk your head, if you are feeling the heat.
