It's been hot here in the Valley, and due to a dry winter, the forests will be subject to high fire danger regulations.

Details here.

"Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or recreation area, she said."

You can answer a quiz and download your own printable California Campfire permit here. I don't think 'Zoners will need the cheat mode.

Unbelievable to me, we have seen cigarette butts on the Baldy ski hut trail on more than one occasion. After all of the wild fires, the Station Fire being the most recent for us, I can't believe that anyone would be so stupid and careless.

wagga - Do you know if the California Campfire Permit is good only for NFS land, or will it cover the entire JMT, including NPs? If you don't know, don't worry.

Found on the Intertubez.

"If you create a campfire of any kind on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or National Park Service, you will need a campfire permit."

Sounds like my permit would be good for the entire JMT, start to finish, then.

Thanks.

The campfire permit is good (and required) for all of California, and can be downloaded free at any number of sites, including Sequoia NF which includes an entertaining little quiz. Its for the entire year, its free, and its mainly an exercise to get you to read the rules that it includes.

It is NOT however all you need to know or have, as the NPs and NFs are all instituting various levels of fire restrictions and prohibitions, so you need to check specifically with every jurisdiction you go into.

Wherever you go, there you are.

The fire permit regulations bring up the question: Do you need a fire permit if you are only using a stove, and not building a camp fire?

I don't think you do, but someone might like to clarify and confirm this.

From the permit page:

Quote:
You must have a California Campfire Permit to use a stove, lantern, or campfire outside a developed campground or recreation area.

The advice given on completely extinguishing the fire is OK, but those of us who rely on having working fingers for a living do the "feel" part a little differently.

We use our feet, which are much tougher. Also, we can then call it footing out the pyre.
