We confirmed our reservation for a day permit next Friday and when asked about bear canisters, we were informed they were not required for a day hike. Can anyone confirm this? We understood they were needed anytime you were in the wilderness area.

Thanks.

Bear canisters are not required for day hikes - true. "Bear-resistant" food containers are only required for overnight stays in the backcountry.

However, don't leave your food sitting around unattended or marmots, squirrels and birds will have a little feast at your expense.

In Inyo National Forest, the Ursack is allowed for backpacking, along with most hard-sided canisters. However, hard-sided, approved bear-resistant containers are required in SEKI and Yosemite national parks; the Ursack is not yet approved in those two parks.
