Didn't get much done last year hiking wise. Just a 6 day mountaineering course on Mt. Baker which was fantastic.

This year, Shasta at least, or maybe Rainier. And hopefully a Whitney visit with the Bulldog family.

This Feb/March a Death Valley visit with Bulldog.

After a long bout of being a sloth, I'm easing back into the training routine. Found this inspiring:

So, what are your plans?

I have no idea yet outside Alaska. There is just so much new here to do that I haven't even touched yet. I actually hope to run a "Wilderness Marathon". That is a race of the Crow Pass Hike I posted in the day trip thread. The requirement is to reach the top of the pass in 1 hour and complete the entire 22 mile or so race in 6 hours.

Already training for that and am finding my tolerance for cold weather running is much better than I ever imagined. Putting in several miles in 30 degree weather with only shorts and thin long sleeve shirt. Colder runs I will add a layer.

I'm hoping to get my family to Glacier N.P. and Yellowstone this summer. Someone nominated a hike in Glacier I want to do when I am there.

Oh, and hoping for a side trip to the Sierra too. cool

The video was very inspiring, thanks for sharing. thanks

We are camping in Death Valley Easter weekend, it will be our first time there.

We had planned to visit Yellowstone this summer, but that had to be put off this year so we have a couple of reservations at the portal in May and June. My son loves the campground; he doesn't want to camp anywhere else and has agreed to hike ALL the way to Lone Pine Lake this year...I'll believe it when I see it.

We are also planning on hiking up the mountain again this year, probably in August. We are trying to figure out the schedule with work, school, someone to take care of the kid. I am happy with the changes made to the lottery, with the opportunity to confirm/decline trip dates offered. I did get two sets of permits last year and returned the one we were not going to use and just considered it a donation to the Inyo Forest.

Since Yellowstone was cancelled, I am hoping we can go to Zion (also first time) in the fall.

With three young kids, and a wife who's becoming more interested in hitting the trail with me, it's hard to set up many big trips. The wife and I are hoping to hit the HST this summer, and I'm planning to get her to the Whitney summit for her first time on that trip.

We'll also do plenty of day hikes with the kids. My oldest (3 yrs old) has been talking since the weather turned about all the great hikes we did this past summer. She got out of the carrier and onto her feet this past summer for some hikes of her own, and she's excited to do more. Daddy's back appreciates it, too! grin

I wasn't sure what I was going to do this year. I thought I might not do another long hike but I just had to say why not?

I'm going to try and leave on June 1st again this year and probably shoot for another 140 day hike like last year. I just have to try and not get injured this time around. Every year I have gone out for more days then the year before so I have to at least beat 111 days.

Good luck, Chris! If you DO hike the HST, the Crescent Meadow trailhead is definitely a kid-friendly place. If the kids grandparents or capable people are with you, you all could hike out the trail less than a mile to "Eagle View", and the kids could see all the way to Kaweah Gap where you will be heading.

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve; we just might do that!

I'll be checking in over the summer prior to the trip if we decide to make it happen.

I was planning on doing the JMT this year, but I can see that it isn't going to happen. Shooting for OV to MtW instead.

Planning on doing something this winter if my schedule lightens up.

I've been taking my son's wrestling team on 5.5mile weekly conditioning hikes up in the Santa Monica mountains behind our house. Plan on continuing that through the end of February.

Hoping to do some winter/early spring hikes on the MMWT. Going to start small. Maybe an overnight to LPL and then work my way up. If I make it up to trail crest by the end of the snow season, I will be happy.

Planning on Tuttle Creek or Meysan Lake during the height of the season.

Not even going to bother trying to get a whitney permit this year. I'll go up, see if I can get a walk-in, if not, I'll explore other trails.

My group has reservations for a return trip just after Memorial Day to Yosemite. The recent dump of snow on the Sierras may limit our options come May/early June. And we are considering a trip to the Ruby Mountains or possibly back to Zion just after Labor Day. I guess we try to avoid the crowds. We are interested in The Narrows. One member of our group was unsuccessful in the Whitney permit lottery last year.

Two trips for me. First with my daughter to hike up to Dana Peak and Mt. Langley (two separate hikes). This is set for August.
Secont trip in Sept. with "yet to be determined guide" to do Cathedreal Peak and Whitney - either East Face, or East Buttress. I will probably also try Russell one or two days later.

Immediate plans include X-C skiing and snow-shoeing; plenty of snow in the Sierras. Hiking in the Burrens of southwest coast of Ireland late May. 100 miler on the JMT, southern section - going in over Bishop Pass and coming out at Whitney. And hopefully, the Ruby Mountains of eastern Nevada. Etc, etc.

Ruby mountains! I did not think that anyone else went near there. I have a friend that lives in Wells, Nv., and travels through and around the "Rubies" every day. I would appreciate any recreational information on this little range, Bob (He does not hike, but I do)

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Here you go, Bee: http://www.rubymountains.net/

This is probably the best info on the Ruby Range.

Excellent information -- thank you, Bob. I had no idea that the Rubies were a "destination" all to themselves, as they have been an ever-present backdrop to hundreds of pictures sent to me. I do know, however, that Lamoille Canyon (not to far away) is stunning in the Autumn.

Luck! Scored my first TH and date choice on first try in the Yosemite lottery. Happy Isles on Aug 5, Whitney Portal exit (on the 26th, nominally). I heard there's a trail that goes that way . . .

Congratulations, saltydog! I am sure you will enjoy that trail. Be prepared, in some summers August can be rainy.

My plans: Grand Canyon R-2-R day hike about May 16. Thanks to Julius S for making the transportation possible.

Later in the summer, I want to do the hike posted by raphus: Swiftcurrent pass in Glacier National Park. Our family is planning to visit GNP, so one of the days, I am doing that hike! I've created a Google map showing the route. Gmap4 map: Swiftcurrent Pass

I'm itching to get to Kern Hot Springs on the HST, since I missed it with my Pants Pass hike last summer. But it may have to wait another year.

plans - always have plans

April - Telescope Peak, Whitney Mountaineer's Route, White Mountain West Ridge, Ski Mammoth, Ski Tour around Tuolumne Meadows, maybe go with a guided tour into the Ionian to wrap it up

August - either another Muir Trail jo-jo attempt, or hike my very own Sierra High Route, (a combination of SHR, MTR and off trail routes I always wanted to explore to go from Tuolumne Meadows to Whitney).
