Many of you may have already heard about the documentary called "Mile Mile & A Half" from REI, Adventure 16, and other various hiking websites but in case you haven't...check out this video!! http://themuirproject.com/video3

A group of filmmakers hiked the JMT last year and documented it with incredible photography/cinematography - it is truly inspiring! When I watched the most recent trailer and saw the 'backside' Whitney from Trail Crest to the Hut, I got so emotional because I recognized it!! We were there (3 weeks today!!) and I can honestly say that it was a life changing experience for me. All of which may have never happened if I hadn't found this and the WPS board and been motivated by all you with your own amazing stories and pictures! I know that there is more to hiking than Mt. Whitney, but I am glad that mountain has brought us all together.

grin Heather

Thanks for posting that, Heather.

Can you tell us... Is this a project to create a feature-length movie, or IS it done now, or what?

The trailers have such short sound and picture shots, leaves me want to see the real thing.

...and seeing your post made me recall, Harvey posted something last year:   Muir Project video

Thanks Steve!

They are working on making a full length documentary and are asking for help/funding with the production fees to get the movie made. Here is the link to their fund raiser on kickstarter - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/them...entary?ref=live

I believe I saw Harvey's post last year as well (maybe that is how I stumbled on this project to begin with!) and then kept up with them via Facebook. I also can't wait to see the whole movie once it is done wink

This project was mentioned again recently. Thought I'd check out the site again. Their website shows people have pledged $85,403 toward a goal of $78,100. Hmmmm.... that's over $7k above the target! Wishing we could see a feature length video.

Their Vimeo site shows nine short videos. I think I'll embed each one here. They are fun to watch. If you have hiked all or part of the JMT, you will recognize many of the locations.

Here's their Kickstarter.com fundraiser website:

I contributed to this project during the fund raising campaign last summer and I should be receiving a DVD of the full documentary sometime in March (hopefully, the release date does not change). The trailers are amazing and I can't wait to see the whole thing. I am hoping it convinces my husband that YES we need to do the JMT!! grin

JMT Campfire Performance

Bernard Chadwick & Paul Bessenbacher perform an original composition around the campfire at Lower Vidette Meadow.

This picture appears to be another music session at Outpost Camp on the Main Mt Whitney Trail.

Great photo and sound quality. I'm looking forward to the finished film!

Also, one our our rangers, Bob Keenan, did a film a few years back: Message From the Mountains that was pretty good. Doesn't seem to be in stock anywhere. If anyone's interested, write me and I'll send you Bob's address.

Thanks for posting this!

Barbara and Chris, if you go, maybe you can find out:  When will their full-length movie/video be released? I sure want to see it.

Here's their "trailer 2" ...I think the initial image is the river crossing near McClure Meadow. Anyone else recognize it?

Don't recognize the r. crossing, but the earlier one, the B&W is just south of Forrester Pass, s. ridge of CalTech Peak to the right, yes?

Steve I just got off the phone with Ric/Jen Serena and learned that the DVD will hopefully be available in Spring, ie late March or in April. Ric said they had no price yet but that the DVD would be available in the Store which is located on their website. There are a few items already listed in the Store which some may wish to purchase now but I am sure many are waiting for the DVD. I want to buy 2.

I am sure Chris will see them at the show Jan 19th and will be able to confirm this info and let us know also.

Regarding the river crossing picture above, here's my picture of McClure Meadow. I think the river crossing is a half mile or so down-river to the west.

It was a fantastic event at Adventure 16. There is no specific date for the DVD. The movie is being shown at some film festivals, as they are trying to line up a distributor. They (the film group) are saying a late spring 2013 release.

The musicians in the movie were at the event last night, and they played several songs. Very good duo that perform under the name Opus Orange.

Along with the film clips, there was stories from the group, live music, FREE pizza, BEER, wine, popcorn, chips & dips, cheese & crackers, and other assorted snacks. The store manager mentioned it was one of the biggest crowds for an in-store event.
