It was an amazing movie, and I don't know how i will be able to do it, but i am very inspired to do the whole John Muir trail someday!!!!! I did mt whitney last year for the first time that was amazing, now the JMT....someday. Please check out the movie when you have the chance.

Hi Norcalhiker,

I am excited that a friend from here has purchased a DVD for me, and is sending it my way! I hope to be watching it soon! smile

As for hiking the entire JMT, you could do it the way I have: in pieces. It took me six separate hikes, but I have hiked every mile of the trail over the years. (...well, I missed a mile between Glenn Pass and Bullfrog Lake when I took a shortcut trail down to Charlotte lake smirk  )

We have a thread with many posts on the topic here: The Muir Project

That's an excellent idea steve. I have a job, a 7 yrd old and wife at home....so a 25 day trip would be tough. I have done the first 5+ miles(north) and the last 20+ miles(south, mt whitney) so perhaps i can fit in the other middle sections of that trail. Thanks.

I know nothing about the trail but intend to learn. Anyone care to suggest access points for segment hiking?

Oh, yeah.

From Reno, you have lots of choices, especially for intro level. Depending on how short you want to cut the segments, Yosemite Valley to Tuolomne (24 mi) or Red's Meadow (Mammoth Lakes, 58 mi) Are very convenient and supported by ESTA/YARTS for shuttles. Most of the major west-side THs are also fairly convenient to ESTA, with a usually-easy hitch down to Rt 6/395. Southern sections are all good through Taboose, Sawmill, Kearsarge, Shepherd, MWMT and more. Probably first thing to do is decide how big a bite you want to take at one time, then find out about THs that match up. There are also some great west-side THs, but public trans generally sucks, unless you want to go between SEKI and Yosemite in one trip. Private cars are usually necessary for shuttles, so from Reno, why bother?

Wherever you go, there you are.

Where did you see the movie? I went to their website, but I couldn't find where/how to buy the DVD.

Happy Trails!

Lone Star - Unfortunately right now the DVD's are not available to purchase online, I believe they will be sometime in the future. They are selling them at the screenings and are adding more dates all the time.

My wife and daughter watched it here in Sacramento last weekend while I was in New Mexico. They bought me a BluRay disc, which I'll watch sometime this week. Getting packed for Shasta this weekend with my daughter and friends, so time will be hard to find, but I'm really looking forward to seeing this. My wife and I just missed them by a day on the trail in July 2011.

They loved the movie so much now they want to accompany me on my next section of JMT. I was going to finish up Mammoth to Whitney, but now the plan is to slow down and just do Mammoth to Bishop with the entire family starting end of June.

That is great. I won't be able to do more sections until next spring/summer. My next section will probably be happy isles to Tuolumne Meadow. Great to hear all the great backpack trips...it just isn't easy finding time these days....But whatever it takes to squeeze in time is what I will have to do.

Norcalhiker, I did the TM to HI as a day hike, trading cars with another group hiking the opposite direction. It's a pretty big hike to do in a day, especially if you start at Happy Isles.

I received the DVD in the mail, and the entire family watched the first part just before bedtime. Really nice!

I felt bad for the guy who dropped out at Tuolumne Meadows.

Yeah I did too. I was actually surprised. I am looking forward to doing happy isles to Tuolumne Meadows...it will probably have to be next year.....but I am looking to do snow creek to north dome to yosemite falls either late this summer or next spring. It looks like a fun hike. There are SO many awesome hikes in Yosemite....as well as all throughout the Sierra....that I have not yet experienced!

Steve,
Zee was at the LA premier and spoke to the audience about dropping out after the film. He admits that he simply wasn't in shape for such an undertaking. He obviously has been doing some sort of training as he looked very fit that night, and he said he is going to section hike the trail.

Looks cool, now if they would just let me give them money and see the whole film!
(note to film makers, figure that out before you make the movie wink )

Starting my JMT solo at HI August 5, with a listed Whitney Portal exit August 26. Open return ticket, though, to allow for all eventualities. I'd like to see the film before the trp, but it might just drive me crazy. Instead, I'll see it after the trip, so I can drive my date crazy with "I was there!" type comments.

Or you could start your hike earlier so you can see the movie sooner. The airlines and reservation folks will understand. smirk
