I don't know if this is possible but I have a day permit reserved for Monday Aug 19th and I have a couple friends with permits on Wednesday Aug 21st. Ideally I would like to hike with them and I am wondering if it is possible to trade or if my best bet is to try for the day of lottery.

Jeff, if you check the 2012 Unused Permits numbers, you can see that there will most likely be walk-in permits available for you if you go in on Tuesday and ask.

There really isn't a way to "trade" your permit. But try calling the wilderness permit number (760-873-2483) and tell them your situation.
