So just finished my summer training for Whitney, which we did relatively pain free last Tuesday(yay! its just a long day!). I am interested in keeping whatever higher elevation exposure I can throughout the fall & winter as best as am able to. What's the story on getting closer to White Mtn during the cooler months? I am down in So Cal so will def hit San G & San J as often as possible. Thanks!

White Mtn. is a long way from winter's road end. My guess it is best done as a ski tour during those months.

I've been up to Schulman Grove in May a few times, when you can drive as far as Sierra View, ~9,800' to 9,900'. We snowshoed the grove and explored the mine adits, which are visible from the road. I do remember someone trying read the peak utilizing snowshoes and a sled, failing both times he tried it.

San Jacinto is fairly easy as long as there isn't a blizzard howling. A blizzard makes it more interesting and fun, though. San Gorgonio is a bit of challenge requiring climbing gear from both sides.

The White Mountain road is usually closed during the winter which, as WBTravis has said, makes for a long ski or snowshoe to White Mountain Peak.

The Mount Barcroft Station provides tons of weather data:

http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/weather/barc.html

The Winter weather in the White Mountains can be quite radical. The highest wind recorded at White Mountain Peak was 162.4 MPH in December, 1968. Temperatures can reach well below -25 F.

White Mtn west ridge is a nice 9000 foot climb in winter with enough snow.

You got it, MooseTracks! ...went looking for your trip report, but can't find it right now. That's way more mountain than I'd ever want to do in a day. tired

I realize it varies year to year, but when does snow usually start accumulating on White Mtn?

My father in law is visiting from NH next month. I'm not too optimistic, but we are hoping for a Mt. Whitney or White Mtn hike the week of Oct 13th.

Thanks, Laura. I really like your pictures, too:

That trip is such an awesome accomplishment!

63C2: You won't know until Oct 10 or so rolls around. It could be a dry fall ...or not. I once climbed Sawtooth peak out of Mineral King first week of November. You don't have nearly the number of daylight hours, but when it is dry, hiking is good.
