Doug from the Whitney Portal Store reports that the gate should be opened about April 20 this year. The Inyo County road crew is currently working on rock removal.

If you switch back and forth between "satellite" (aka Aerial Google Satellite) mode to the "t4" (aka Topo high USA), you can see how to find the trail from the parking lot. The parking lot is the gray area above and left of the crosshairs, and the NRT is below the crosshairs.

Great link to the satellite map, Steve.
I've hiked on the "National Trails" trail and looked across to the sandy parking lot... that green strip is Lone Pine Creek, with very steep and loose banks. Also the trail is in deep shade as it goes up canyon, so conditions are icy in winter.

Hiking up the road is much easier than attempting the bushwack.

How about the gate to Horseshow Meadows? Any idea on the anticipated unlocking?

I'd like an early entry down to the Kern River trench.

thanks

paul

Paul and others:
I called the Inyo County road dept. office and talked to the receptionist. She reported that they plan to have both roads open by April 25. She told me they were working on them now.

Note that fishing season opens Apr. 26. There must be more fishermen in Inyo County than hikers. wink In the past, they have always made opening day for fishing as their target.

The April 25 date is later than the Apr 20 that Doug reported, so maybe we can find out closer to those dates what really will occur.

Thanks Steve.....my son will be mad since I walk his dog during the week....Sadly, my retirement duties. I am out of here as soon as the gate is opened. Last year it was a early June trip down to the Kern and around. Now, an early May trip!!!!!!

Paul, do you make it to Kern Hot Springs on any of those trips? I'd like to get there this summer.

Steve, for the last couple years I have made the Kern River loop in June (and sometimes again in early October), and yes, I always stop at the Hot Springs.

From Horseshow Meadows I head over Trail Pass, through Mulkey Meadows, Tunnel and down Golden Trout Creek to the Kern. From there, Junction Meadow, up Wallace Creek, and back to Horseshoe either over Army Pass or New Army depending.....but I always take the Old South Fork Trail out.

I just received this word:

The county expects to open the gate on Whitney Portal Road Friday afternoon, April 18.

Horseshoe Meadows road will remain closed "possibly another week".

Wonder if the parking lots are largely free of snow. Seems like they should be. I will be up there next weekend.
