First grateful thanks to Akichow, Salty, Laura and Steve for their blogs and timely advice for my planning and successful completion of long dreamed solo HST hike. Here is what I did and would include details later during the weekend.

July 14: Crescent Meadows to Mehrten creek Camp ground on the rocks.
July 15: Mehrten Ck to Precipice Lake
July 16: Precipice lake to Moraine Lake
July 17: Moraine Lake to Kern Hot Springs
July 18: Kern Hot Springs to Wallace Ck CG on JMT after crossing Wallace Ck (south bound)
July 19: Wallace Ck CG on JMT to Guitar Lake
July 20: Guitar lake to second Keeler window and then all the way down to Whitney Portal

By the time I reached second Keeler window on the way the summit(around 6am), the mountain became very angry and threw at me everything in its arsenal, huge electric storm, lightning, splitting thunder, hail and snow. I thanked the mountain Gods, hunkered down in my poncho for a time and decided to turn back. Found some previous JMT friends at the trail Junction (Steve and his Mom) whom I met at the Golden stair case last year in another storm (which was brief) and he remembered my trail name "Amble On".

It snowed heavily thru the 99 switch backs and there was no sign of snow patch to glissade on frown This was my fastest descent and came to WP by evensong.

So I take this as a sign that I have to come back next year for completing the summiting!

Will post full report with photos and spot messages during the weekend. I did warn my daughter that she may not be able to get spot messages from the Kern river canyon and she did miss one message sent from river canyon. Lots of Love to my two SJ cousins who took care of the logistics of dropping me at Visalia and picking me up from Whitney Portal. Currently basking in the California sun at the Pigeon Point light house!

Missed you by two days, Krishna! I left the summit Saturday morning early (July 19). ...in perfect weather.

I camped at Kern Hot Springs the night of July 15.

Amble On!

Krishna:

What admirable judgment and discipline to back off so close to the summit. Truly exemplary mountaincraft.

I am so glad to have met you at Woods Creek last year, and would be very pleased to see you back again next year or any time.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Ditto. And it sounds like you had a safe and enjoyable trip overall, plus a light show to celebrate your grande finale.

Congrats! Looking forward to the pics.

Hi Steve, Salty, Akichow!

Thanks for all the hints posted in this blog by all of you and I took advantage of all of them! Mt. Whitney has got its own personality! We can plan and plan and the mountain decides to allow us or not! For me 5 out of 7 is not a bad record smile This also means I have to come back next year!

Thanks!

Amble On!
