Ah, the false equivalency argument.

Professionals do things better than non-professionals, that they are trained, certified, and are licensed to do.

Seems reasonable.

But anyone can post on the internet, so all arguments posted on the internet are equivalently good, irrespective of the background, experience, certification or licensing of the poster?

He called in co-ordinates, he could have called in the wrong ones and CG operator could have copied them wrong. This could be a case of human error. Based on that, I could say I do not trust humans.
=====================================

I don't. But add technology that has not been practiced or trained to an untrustworthy human, and you do not have a superior product.

Add crampons to the boots of a person who has never worn them, who has never even checked to see if they fit, and you do not have a safer ice climber.

Ken,

I answered to a blanket statement, I do not trust technology. Now you are qualifying it. This is the equivalent of moving the bases while the ball is in the air.

Which is it? I trust technology as long as someone is trained and licensed or I don't trust it at all.

No false equivalency at all.

Wrong logic.

correct logic: You can't depend upon making up with unreliable technology for someone who is deficient in the first place.

I am not qualifying anything, because I actually know the results of the investigation, and listened to the taped radio call. There was no error in reading or writing involved.

But even if there were, that is still a drawback of the technology--you can still have errors, even when the technology works perfectly.

What is the definition of is, Ken?

You continue to qualify an unqualified statement rather than say I misspoke.

Ken & WB,

You are both great contributers, BUT........

You guys are like members of my family that cannot sit at the same table without spending two hours defining/arguing what "is" IS. Only in this case, the discussion is in English.

Such exchanges are insufferable to those 'sitting at the table' and really does not allow for other conversation to develop. In the words of my Aunt Cecelia "Go in the other room -- we want to hear about Rufina's vacation!". Really, when it breaks down to what "is" IS, just take it to Private Messaging, so the whole family does not have to endure.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

I agree. There have been a few threads recently like this. Often the same people debating semantics with no resolution in sight. Reminds me of politics - endless debate with little chance of changing the other's mind. At first it may be entertaining but it quickly becomes tedious and trivial. I've hesitated commenting thinking Steve might address this. But on the other hand this demonstrates the various opinions that contribute to a diverse forum.

I've been watching the endless debating, too, wishing it would end, not knowing what to write. Bee has hit the nail on the head, saying it way better than I could have.

I would like to underscore this part of Bee's words:
and really does not allow for other conversation to develop.

This forum is here to promote open discussion, especially related to hiking and providing information that is helpful to Mt. Whitney hikers. Arm-wrestling over semantics diminishes the value of what is written in the forum.
