I hope I am not asking a ridiculous question here; I switched to a tarp type tent last fall and I am from a land of mosquitos so I made a screen liner for the tarp. I don't want to carry the liner if I don't have to. We are on for a last week June hike (at Whitney) and we will camp at Trail Camp. Are insects an issue at that elevation?

Thanks.

I don't think the mosquitoes are ever a problem at Trail Camp. Down lower at Outpost Camp, yes.

I've never camped in the Whitney Zone, but I've never really seen any. I've always suspected that WAG bag stench keeps 'em at bay.

Um... in general, insects are usually attracted by what goes into the WAG bags... never seen flies circling cow pies? smile

Actually, Jim, mossies are attracted to carbon dioxide that people and animals exhale. I read that in some scientific article once.

From personal experience, I have observed that they are attracted to some people more than others. I was hiking with a friend once, and the mosquitoes were driving him nuts, with a dozen stuck to his shirt and more buzzing his face. Meanwhile, I was not being bothered much at all.

I like to take him along on all my hikes. grin

June and July can and " Will Be Very Bad to Extreme " in the Glacier Lodge and Whitney area/ Cottonwoon Lakes , for Mosquitos and Biting Flys !!!! Carry 100 percent Deet and Mosquito Head Netting. Lond sleeve shirts and Pants help as well . Those that do not have a Head Net ( and a Hat under).... Will wish they had one. Black is the best. Green and white block your view more. With all this extra Rain and snow Now...the Insects will Have more than Enough water to Breed and multiply and Drill Holes into Homo Sapiens for Blood. If they are not flying , then consider yourself fortunate for that day ! Many diseases are in Bites Now , and a head net and a 1 oz. bottle of DEET is Lite weight Insurance. Trust Me ! Happy Trails ! gst
