What are the best sources of water BEFORE the Trail Camp area? I know we pass water along the way (e.g., LP Lake, Mirror Lake), but appreciate thoughts on best places to refill and filter.

Thanks.

I like to refill at Trailside Meadow. The spring at switchback 22 (above Trail Camp) was flowing really well as of Monday.

Best water on the whole trail is the true spring just entering Bighorn Park. first stream crossing after slight descent into the Park

Wherever you go, there you are.

Bob R has created a good map and posted pictures of the water sites. His PDF document, "Reliable Water Sources Along the Mt. Whitney Trail" seems to be gone.

I have copied the pictures and map to a new album, Whitney Water Sources. The pictures and captions give a good idea of water sources.

Here is the map: (You can click it for a full-screen view)

Damn Steve, you looked at a map.

This question comes up every year and is easily answered by looking at this unique thing called a map. The trail crosses or is adjacent to water a lot all the way to Trail Camp.

Buying one and studying it before going will cut the surprise factor to near nil.

I actually DO have a map, so no sarcasm needed. It's amazing how people think nothing of being nasty to another person when they're hiding behind their computer screen and keyboard.

If you read my question carefully, you'll see I was seeking opinions, not facts. Maps convey possible water sources; I had asked about best sources. While there is water along many points of the trail (which I've done 7 times), there are factors like ease of access, perceptions of water quality, and something called current conditions that may influence one's choice of site. Those factors are not captured in a map.

I appreciate those who actually tried to help instead of being rude. I guess every board will have its trolls. Fortunately they are the minority in this forum.

what are the current water conditions on the trail? I don't think we've had much rain this year.

All the water sources should have water, including the spring at switchback 22. The area has been getting regular rainfall and thunderstorms, so that will keep things flowing.

awesome Steve C, thanks for the info. Actually this did not occur to me to check the water status but a colleague at work who has already done Whitney told me I better check it out, glad to know all is good!
