Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion MR or Main Trail Oct 9

Hi Folks,

We have our passes for this coming Friday. I've taken the MR multiple times but never this late in the season. Has anyone been up this route? I am guessing there has been a dusting of snow but this small accumulation can make the MR treacherous.

We have passes for this Friday also. There has been quite a bit of snow, some report areas of knee to thigh high. I believe there is still a missing hiker also. Hopefully the "clear" weather to come and warm up will help tremendously.. Hopefully. We were going to start at around 230, may push that back 30-45 minutes to give more time for sun to hit upper areas by the time we expect to get there. Good luck to you, and you are more than welcome to join my wife and I on the hike.

Which route are you planing on taking?

We are planning for a similar start time.

Please let us know how the trail is. I have permits for sunday 10/11. I'm hoping that the warming weather will melt alot of the snow and make it passable. My group is all in good shape but we don't have any mountaineering equipment like crampons rope ice axe so if it isn't just hikeable, we will have to cancel the trip.

We will be taking the main trail. Staying at comfort inn Thursday night

Great, look for us on the trail. There are 3 in our group total. Looks like we'll be taking the Main Trail as well.

I'll try to keep this thread updated for those of you who are hitting the trail over the weekend.

I'm not too proud to turn back if there is too much risk.

Yes Please keep us posted. I'm heading up the main trail next Tuesday, 13th, to trail camp and continuing on to the summit on the 14th. So far the weather out look appears to be decent enough and hopefully not to much snow or ice is left.
